YEAR-AT-A-GLANCE
2008-2009
The following is a
list of our fund-raisers and activities.
Don't forget to check
out Rebate Programs, which includes schoolpop.com, Big Y,
SNET and Target!
September
Calendar:
Each
fall parents can purchase an Elementary school calendar that is already
notated with the various school functions from Circus Day to grade Open
Houses. It is invaluable to a
busy family that lives by their Calendar!
This committee collects artwork from children in the spring and
selects drawings that will grace each month’s page.
After collecting all school and PTO dates they then have the
calendar printed over the summer so it is ready for fall sales.
Cider Mill
Road Race & Family Fun Run:
Sat.,
Sep. 27, 2008
This energetic
committee gets the whole community involved in a family-fun day at
Crandall’s Park.
Running races are held for various age groups culminating in a
timed 5K Road Race that attracts runners from around the state.
Volunteers solicit sponsors, design T-shirts, coordinate public
safety, do publicity, and handle applications and registration.
On race day they coordinate the races, provide refreshments and
entertainment, and hand out the trophies.
Excuse Pads:
Excuse pads are available for sale all year as a convenient method for
parents to notify the school of absences, late arrivals, and changes to
their child’s normal bus pick up schedule. Sales are heaviest in September and then sporadic throughout
the rest of the year. Click here
to view!
October
Ice Cream Social:
The
Social is our first big family event of the season!
Join the Ice Cream Social committee for a fun evening of visiting
with friends. It may even be your own teacher serving up the best ice cream sundae in town.
Entertainment Books: This
fundraiser is our largest fundraiser to date. Last year we raised
over $15,000! This committee announces the sale of entertainment
books in October and then orchestrates sending a book home with each
child for review. After the parent reviews the book they may choose
to purchase it or send it back. This committee delivers and collects
the Entertainment books over a two-week period.
Greeting Cards:
A great
fundraiser which we recently introduced, allows you to showcase your
child’s artwork on a greeting card that is printed in packs of 50.
This committee sends out order forms with the child’s completed
drawing and then collects the orders and sorts them by classroom.
All drawings are then sent to the vendor in November.
Finished cards are delivered the first week of December and are
distributed to the children who placed orders.
Halloween Costume Fundraiser:
Halloween is one of the biggest holidays celebrated by children and adults.
We earn 15% in cash for every order that is placed using our school code.
All you do is go on-line to
http://www.halloweenstreet.com to place your order, use our school code (TOE20),
and have the costumes sent right to your doorstep.
Pass the code to family, friends, and co-workers. Anyone can use our code and we earn cash for our school!!
If you have any questions please contact Susan Janton at 870-7792.
Macy's Shop for a Cause:
A day of discounted shopping at Macy's in Buckland Mall.
Purchase a $5.00 ticket and you will receive a shopping pass for 10%-20% off Macy's regular and sales prices.
All the money raised from ticket sales goes directly to TEPTO.
November
Festival of Giving:
The Shoppes at Buckland Hills.
Sunday November 18, 2007 from 6:00 PM to 9:30 PM.
February
Willington Pizza:
Once a year Willington Pizza
opens its doors to the Tolland Elementary community by allowing our
teachers, school staff, and volunteers help hostess and bus tables.
In exchange Willington Pizza donates a percentage of sales.
This day is a lot of fun and everyone goes home happy!
The Willington Pizza Day committee organizes the event and
schedules the volunteers.
Joe Corbi Family Favorites:
Pizza, calzones, bread and other goodies will
be delivered in time for March Madness! Please consider patronizing TEPTO's newest fundraiser
March
Book Fair:
The Book Fair is a huge extravaganza of book buying fun!
The fair is set up at each school for a week, children get to visit
during their library time and fill out a “book buying wish list” that
goes home to mom and dad. Parents are also encouraged to visit the library and check
out the great books – they make terrific gifts! The Book Fair Committee needs lots of volunteers to make this
fund-raiser a success – sign up at the beginning of the school year.
April
Author’s Luncheon:
Every year TEPTO sponsors an author to visit both
Birch Grove and Tolland Intermediary school. The author spends a day at each school,
showing the children how to write and illustrate books.
To make our author feel welcome, TEPTO also sponsors a luncheon for them, allowing all staff to sit
and visit with our guest.
May
Children’s Day Fair:
Children's Day is our largest coordination effort, involving over 200 Volunteers.
This committee designs and plans a wonderful day at Birch Grove where
children can play games, get their face painted, adopt a new stuffed animal, decorate a cupcake, run through
an inflatable maze or stop by one of the many food booths and much more.
Parents wait each year for great buys in the garden room and the mini-book fair.
On Going Activities
Thru Out the Year
Assemblies:
The Assembly Committee works closely with each school’s teacher
committee to pick age appropriate assemblies for the student body.
The funds raised by the PTO each year pay for these assemblies.
During the 2004-2005 school year,  we hosted the following at Parker
School: Sirius Coyote,
Storyteller Mike Kachuba and Keith Michael Johnson was "Mad about Math".  We ended the year by
sponsoring field day entertainment Tirebiter.  The following events were sponsored at Birch Grove: Sadecky's
Puppets, Arithmetickles, Storyteller Ann Shapiro.  At the first ever field day the entertainment
Stevesongs was sponsored by the TEPTO.  The National Theatre of the Deaf performed at each school.
Book
Donations:
This committee coordinates the collection of donations to purchase books
in a child or family’s name. The
books are then donated to the school libraries.
Each book receives a commemorative plaque with the chosen name and
becomes a permanent addition to our libraries.
Box
Tops for Education:
During the entire school year, we collect General Mills Box Tops.
Children usually bring box tops to school that are collected and counted by
the committee. The committee then
mails them to General Mills and waits for the check to come back!
This year children will be able to “vote” for what their Box Tops
will buy when they deposit them in the boxes at school. NOTE:
Look on all sides of GM boxes! Sometimes there have been 5
Box Tops on a box and they can all be clipped and turned in!
Gift Cards:
Our gift card program works with an outside company to
sell gift cards for retailers, restaurants and grocery stores you shop at every day.
You purchase the card through TEPTO and then use it like cash at the retailer TEPTO makes a profit off of each
gift card sold. You can support TEPTO by buying the things you need for your family and home.
Newsletter:
Each month,
after the PTO meeting, we issue a comprehensive newsletter.
This committee is in charge of collecting,
typing, copying, collating, stapling and distributing the newsletter each month.
Help is always welcome to collate and staple the newsletters on each
Friday after the TEPTO meetings.

puts together the staff appreciation breakfast in May, and also provides the
school staff with other fun tokens of our appreciation on a monthly basis during
the school year. For example, this
year they were responsible for giving everyone Hershey kisses for Valentine’s
Day, green pens for St. Patrick’s Day, bags of seeds for welcoming springtime,
tea bags and muffins during the winter months, etc.
