During the summer
of 2006 the Tolland Education Foundation awarded $5100 to Ms. Tara Shumate,
a Family and Consumer Science teacher at Tolland High. With the grant
Ms. Shumate purchased a Little Tykes playscape for the Creative Nursery
and Preschool located within the new Tolland High School . As part of
the Childhood Development program, high school students observe and interact
with children in a working preschool program. The playscape was installed
just in time for the preschool's opening on September 27, 2006 .

Peter Leeds, English Department Chair, was awarded the full cost to bring
a "Shakesperience" to Tolland High by the Tolland Education
Foundation on March 6, 2005. Shakesperience is an educational company
which comes into schools and teaches students the basics of acting in
Shakespearean plays. Professional actors teach students how to act out
parts of a play while allowing those students the ability to interact
with the actors, ask questions, explore the language and eventually perform
in front of an audience. The study of drama, dramatic principles and oral
presentations are objectives of the 10th grade English curriculum. Romeo
and Juliet is the first introduction to Shakespeare that students receive
and this unique program, held in April of 2005, provided an additional
dimension to the literary and historical perspective of Shakespeare's
plays.
