English Language Learners’ Information
The Tolland Public Schools emphasize the development of listening, speaking, reading and writing skills of English Language Learners through both a push-in and pull out model. The focus is on the learner being able to communicate in English. The Tolland Public Schools are committed to providing all English Language Learners with a high-quality, academic education that will prepare them to be lifelong learners who can successfully compete in our global society.
Fun Facts about the TPS EL Students:
- There are 20 different languages spoken by the students of the Tolland Public Schools
- The TPS English Language Learner population is growing! This provides us with a rich tapestry of culture and language
Process of Identifying English Language Learners (ELL)
If the Home Language Survey indicates that a language other than English is spoken in the home, two actions are taken
- Student is tested using the LAS Links Placement Test
- A review of student progress is conducted annually using the LAS Links (if the student is deemed EL)
