DRUGS, ALCHOHOL, and our SCHOOLS – come for a presentation and discussion of the results of the ERASE survey for the Tolland Public Schools.

With 68.6% of Tolland seniors reporting that they have drunk alcohol and 51.1% reporting they have smoked marijuana, it is time to examine more closely what our students experience.  Join us for a presentation of the 2014 East of the River Action for Substance Abuse Elimination (E.R.A.S.E.) survey results of Tolland High School and Tolland Middle School students.  We will share the data from the surveys, the student perspective of the influences, dangers, and availability of drugs and alcohol, and the resources offered by the Town of Tolland and the Board of Education.  This is an opportunity for parents and community members to educate themselves on some of the serious challenges our students face in our home town.  As a community, we hope to come together to brainstorm positive change that will benefit all.

Building trust between parent and child grows and blossoms and is the foundation of successful development. INTRODUCTION TO WRITERS WORKSHOP

What does an art studio, music studio, and home workroom have in common with a writing workshop?  This session will explain how the classroom becomes a “writing studio” during writing workshop time. This year, students in grades kindergarten through grade 8 are learning how to compose narrative, informative, and opinion/argument pieces within a writing workshop. This approach to teaching writing and learning how to write is both research based and aligned with the Common Core State Standards. Attendees of this session will participate in a writing workshop to write an argument “flash-draft.”

Come and learn about the Writers Workshop program in the Tolland Public Schools. This program, inspired by Lucy Calkins and educators involved in the Reading and Writing Project at Columbia University, is the future of writing instruction. Come get an overview of what your children are learning, and get some answers to your questions about the program!
